Pain is the most challenging problem in biomedical research and medicine. It is a challenge to the sufferer who must often learn to live with pain for which no other therapy has been found and it is a challenge for the health professional and the scientist who try to understand the biological mechanisms that can cause such terrible suffering.
In the past, pain was considered to be just a symptom of disease or injury. Now we are aware that chronic, severe pain is a problem in its own right. Very often it is more intolerable and debilitating than the disease process which initiated it.
